My Approach to Learning and Playing: I learn mostly by using tablature. I like to use Powertab because it helps to have the audio since I don’t read music. I also use Powertab for transcribing for the same reason. Exercises are an important part of learning for me because it helps me to physically pull off the things that I’m trying to learn. But I don’t prefer nonmusical exercises. Like, instead of running chromatic scales I tend to use scale shapes in my exercises that I would use to play common scales. And for me it helps to have a program. Otherwise I’ll progress too slowly because I’ll waste too much time trying to figure out what I need to work on each time I sit down to play. Probably the most important part of learning for me is just playing. Whether it’s with people or recordings. Most of my playing time is spent doing that.
My Musical Education: Mostly self-administered. Only took lessons for a couple months to get me started with my first guitar when I was 12. But of course you learn something from everyone that you communicate with in any way about music.
My Musical Influences: It all goes back to Mick Mars when I was 12. He was the first guy who got me interested in guitar. And then Ace Frehley once I discovered Kiss. Those are the guys that made me want to play. I wouldn’t say that their style of playing really influenced me though. Kerry King is the guy that really influenced my playing. And Alex Lifeson had a profound effect on my playing. And then artists like Tori Amos and James Taylor have had some effect on my approach to music. But mostly I just try to be myself.
My Learning Resources: Again, using Powertab has been monumental to me. The Powertab community of transcribers is a great resource for me as well as sites like GKN. GKN has always been my favorite instructional site.

This is a cover of Photograph by Nickelback that I recorded. I recorded a remake of Pearl Jam’s Jeremy. I did all of the drums, guitars and vocals on my own. Check it out. I’m all about cover tunes right now because I’m still a “home recording” rookie. Here’s a remake of Home Sweet Home that I did. Another cover tune down... Red Barchetta...
